The most intimidating aspect of mounted shooting is the idea of shooting a gun from horseback. It isn't! The idea of training a horse to tolerate gun noise soon takes it's place. Actually, this is probably the easiest step in the process and should be started only after the horse has developed a very good foundation of trust, consent and respect. Once the horse is "light" on the bit and can respond to heel and leg pressure, then desenitizing to gun noise can be introduced. The beginner or novice trainer should seek help from experienced shooters who have successfully trained shooting horses, as most of them will be willing to share their knowledge and advice. Secondly, this is a sport for intermediate to advanced riders. Novice riders should understand that horsemanship is the number one most important ingredient. Again, seek out accomplished shooters to get advice and instruction- it will really pay off! |
